Bornhald is upset with Fain; on three separate occasions, Fain has taken Whitecloaks with him on patrols to the south only to have the Whitecloaks die in "Trolloc attacks. Fain knows that one of the three boys is back in Emond's Field; he knows it is not Rand but doesn't know whether it is Perrin or Mat. He is also holding a Myrddraal prisoner in his tent; he has tortured him into accepting some type of agreement TSR, Ch. From a distance, Fain watches the defense of Emond's Field and is angry that the villagers fight off the Trollocs; his plan to draw Rand to him has failed.
Fain has turned some Whitecloaks, presumably those "killed" fighting Trollocs, into his followers. Fain arrives in Tar Valon and manages to get an audience with Elaida ; Fain is there to get back the ruby dagger from Shadar Logoth. Padan Fain picks the lock on the door to the room where the ruby dagger is being kept; he manages to get the ruby dagger back.
Alviarin catches him after he has murdered the girl who had been set to guard the door; a ward was on the lock he picked. Fain figures out that she is Black Ajah ; he manages to convince her that he is a high level Darkfriend or that he has been sent by one of the Forsaken so she agrees to let him leave and to clean up the mess he has made TFoH, Ch.
Fain travels to Caemlyn LoC, Ch. Fain tests the defenses around Rand by using his Whitecloak followers but doesn't actually want him killed LoC, Ch. Perwyn Belman , the son of a Darkfriend Fain is staying with, brings Fain news that there was a failed assassination attempt that morning on Rand LoC, Ch.
Fain can feel the difference in Rand once Alanna bonds him; he describes it "as if someone else had suddenly taken a partial possession of al'Thor, and in doing so pushed away a part of Fain's own possession.
He has also developed other abilities that he doesn't really understand LoC, Ch. Rand tells Caraline Damodred Fain's true identity and that there is a bounty of one hundred thousand gold crowns on his head for what he did to the Two Rivers. When Rand and company are attempting to get out of the mist that surrounds Toram Riatin's camp, Fain jumps out of the fog, cuts Rand with the ruby dagger and runs away into the mist ACoS, Ch.
When Rand arrives and sees the swollen corpses of Torval and Gedwyn, he recognizes it as Fain's work; Toram Riatin is there as well and attempts to attack Rand, but he is diverted by Fain and ends up fighting with Lan instead.
Fain now has the ability to create illusions and tries to trick Rand by making it seems as if Torval and Gedwyn are alive and walking up the stairs; Rand manages to fend off Fain's attack and the Illusion bursts. Fain suddenly stops his attack, tilts his head back as if listening, screams and then flees the building WH, Ch. There is no relevant reference to Padan Fain in this book.
Rand's wound from Fain's dagger still hurts and he wonders whether he will ever be "clean" KoD, Ch. Padan Fain became a darkfriend when he was approximately twenty, promised great rewards which his greed couldn't pass up, and was a darkfriend for more than 40 years.
He was summoned to Shayol Ghul where he met Ba'alzamon who changed him to become a hunter. A year later he returned to Shayol Ghul and his mind was distilled to find out what he had discovered.
He had become the Dark One's hound. By NE he knew it was one of three boys. He then performed rites to bind himself even closer to the Dark One. He brought the trollocs to Emonds Field on Winternight that year. After winternight, he was brought with the trollocs, on the chase after Moiraine and company.
He had to sleep in a cookpot. When the trollocs entered Shadar Logoth, he managed to escape them. But when he left the city, Mordeth tried to take over his body. This created a very evil and dangerous creature that was worse than a darkfriend.
Fain could now feel where the three were, especially Rand. He survived on anything he could grab. He chased them until too exausted to move, and would fall over and sleep. When he awakened he had to chase again. He went half mad with this situation, and looked like a dirty grimy ragbag.
He chased the group into the ways, where he met Machin Shin. Fain listened to and understood the voices. Machin Shin fled from Fain! He feels whole and complete with the dagger. Less than human, worse than vile. His Mashadar is so powerful the Myrddraal seems to die instantly instead of remaining alive until sunset.
The mist has a strange effect on the Trollocs, corrupting them and raising them as almost zombie-like slaves that Fain believes will fight even more viciously than they did before he enslaved them. He has now finally decided to stop the hunt and kill al'Thor. He appears on the battlefield at Thakan'dar calling himself Shaisam.
He is able to spread Mashadar by consuming the souls of Trollocs and Men, and appears to believe Fain is his only weakness, which he can eliminate as soon as he re-establishes himself in a new location, as he had in Shadar Logoth.
Mashadar touches Mat, who appears to die. Shaisam finds Mat lying on the ground, pretending to be dead. Mat rises up, surprising him, steals the dagger and rams it into Shaisam's heart, finally killing him.
Fain is a parallel to the character Mordred out of Arthurian legend whose name is similar to Fain's alias, Mordeth. Mordred was a traitor to King Arthur, and, during their last battle, he fatally wounded Arthur. This is similar to the way that Mordeth left Rand with a never-healing wound during one of their encounters. His relentless pursuit of a character as well as the theme of "transformation by evil" are the main similarities.
