I just wanted to know if you had a chance to re-visit the study this year and if things have changed in the past year? Then I was happy to see I have backlinks! But then I saw I only have 3 dofollow links and most of them are nofollow links. I am just a 1 year old site doing my best to improve my domain score.
Okay, so in my investigation most of my nofollow links are from comments I made to blogs such as this since I entered my website details but I realize there is one site that I can leave a comment and put my URL and it results to a dofollow link count. Or Google will just say.. Hi Jo-Ann, I do intend to update this article to reflect that announcement from Google.
Thanks Brian! This nofollow thing was troubling me for some time. Other websites did not explain so well with examples and pictures.
Brian, ever tested negative SEO attacks? Thank you, Brian. I just loved the explanation. This is the first time I understood the difference. Thanks again! Keep up the great work! Hi Brian, thank you so much for the post!
You have cleared all my doubts. I can confirm that nofollow links impact SEO as well. They might not be nearly as strong as dofollow links but they do help. I have seen nofollow links push the rankings. I was working with a website and I wanted to hit the first page for a specific keyword.
We were on 23 for that keyword. I started building links. Most of these links were from high-authority and niche-relevant forum posting and blog postings. Hubpages, for example. And after 37 days, we were on 6 spot. Now, the keyword was not too competitive. But I think I had nofollow links to thank! Thanks for this post!
Thank you for this informative, yet easy-to-understand post! Hi Brian, thank you for this article. I have been reading numerous articles on dofollow and nofollow links and this has definitely been the most insightful so far! At the moment I have these as non follow, is that correct? Thank you for getting this to rank 1 on Google so the first choice is an actual useful and thorough article explaining all this. Thanks again and best regards. Hi Brian, thank you! Good explanation Brian, I have been following your posts for a couple of months and learned a lot.
Should we use Nofollow attribute to the infographics that we use from other websites? Please help me out. Thanks Brian for a really interesting article.
Was just searching for a more concrete answer on this subject. I actually was of the belief that nofollow links did increase rankings before i read the post.
I still believe they do, but in a much more indirect way — as you write: they help make the overall link profile as natural as possible, and I believe that is the main takeaway. A strong website will have a certain percentage nofollow links.
If you were honest with Google and marked your paid links with a nofollow attribute, those links didn't count against you. What followed after is almost all SEO's jumped to the conclusion that any link with a no-follow attribute was worthless in SEO. Buying and selling of links took a big hit, and most people doing SEO avoided links with the attribute, that is restricting GoogleBot from following it, like the plague.
In other words, they need to trust your brand before they will allow you to rank at the top of their search results. This is mostly accomplished by your homepage SEO , or in other words the backlink profile of your homepage.
But one of the key metrics Google uses to establish if your website is a trustworthy brand is whether or not you have any NoFollow, Sponsored or UGC links. In fact, what you are really doing when you get a sponsored link is you are telling Google, "Hey, we are doing business, and this is our ad copy.
Now Google can look at the anchor text and see how it is relevant to your actual website and give you credit for the anchor text, without the risk of being tagged with an unnatural backlink profile. The point I am trying to make is it seems as though Google expects to see nofollow links in your backlink profile, and if there are none, that potentially raises a red flag for an unnatural profile.
As we have built the software for SEOJet, we have done a ton of backlink research. We looked at 1 ranked sites in every niche, category, and industry and they all showed something very interesting about nofollow links. The link attribute that was supposed to totally kill all SEO effects, shows up a third of the time in 1 ranked sites.
Let's look at a few examples of pages that rank 1 and what percentage of nofollow links each has pointing to that page. Note : I'm looking at just the page that is ranking specifically and not the site as a whole. Now keep in mind that not every 1 ranked site is this high. Obviously, this test or this data is not the end all be all of SEO.
Both new attributes can be used with the nofollow attribute, which I have included in the above example. Just a quick bit here about paid links: many people have conflicting opinions on exactly what a paid link is. However, Google describes paid links as including these types of links:. Here is a synopsis of the current list of what constitutes a link scheme :. I dug into the Wayback Machine in order to look at what Google wrote about link schemes in previously years.
It produces more warmth and you can just turn it off in summer when you are going on france vacation. A nofollowed link may not help you rank higher — but with the decision to treat it as a hint instead of a directive, it still could.
Nofollowed links are also typically accompanied by brand mentions. In one example, local SEO Phil Frost explains how including citations with name, address and phone number in a press release helped a client move from position 20 to position 1 in local search results for their primary keyword.
In this case, despite the links being no-followed, the citations clearly helped their client rank. Case studies by Search Engine Land and Moz , in addition to more recent case studies that come out on a fairly routine basis, demonstrate that it is still possible to improve rankings using press release distribution. That press releases still help with SEO is a testament to the value of nofollow links in this context, whether direct or indirect. Correlative analysis of observational ranking data conducted by Ahrefs also suggests that a relatively even split between dofollow and nofollow links may help rankings.
This is nearly identical to the correlation between the number of external domains linking to a page and its rankings, which sits just 0. One can rightfully argue that these correlation studies could just be showing us that successful pages are more likely to get linked to, and thus are more likely to receive nofollowed links. This is a reasonable objection, but it applies equally to followed links, and, with such a small difference in correlations, it does make one wonder if nofollowed links could actually contribute directly to rankings.
Regardless of whether or not this is the case, the case studies above demonstrate definitively that, directly or indirectly, nofollow links can have a dramatic positive impact on search engine rankings. My personal experience with nofollow links leads me to the same conclusions. The primary value of the link is in getting people to visit your site directly, and that means the purpose of the anchor text is to get people to click through and see more.
Other than receiving direct clicks from your target audience, the main thing you want a nofollow link to accomplish is to earn additional followed links from trusted influencers. Earning those links means producing content that appeals to journalists, thought leaders, microcelebrities and others who have large audiences of their own.
This means that your content should be going the extra mile, since influencers are generally the most voracious infovores in your industry. The best examples of this type of content include:. What is important is how the exposure will lead to coverage in the press, on social networks, on blogs and magazines and so on. As I mentioned above, Google patents suggest that a simple mention of your brand can help improve your visibility in the search results.
Whether Google has actually put this patent to use and found that it helped their rankings algorithm is unclear, but brand mentions are valuable for obvious reasons, and can indirectly benefit your SEO as well. Brand mentions lead to increased searches for your brand name, which in turn can help your rankings in a virtuous feedback cycle.
