What do speedway bikes run on

The bikes race around oval circuits of around metres in length in an anti-clockwise direction over 4 lap races. Speedway meetings can be run as individual events although what you will usually see week in and week out, at most tracks around the country, are 2 teams racing against each other.

The 2 teams have 7 riders each and they race over 15 heats with 2 riders from each team in every heat. Speedway bikes are a unique type of motorcycle. Originally the engines used were upright, the name reflects the way they fitted into the frame of the bike. If speedway was more flexible there could be an amateur class for petrol powered bikes probably be a lot cheaper and easier to maintain if you could use a cut down stock engine.

I was always told this was about safety - methanol has much lower flammability than petrol. But it burns witha clear flame which when it does catch light makes it harder to spot. Methanol also has a high octane number allowing the use for high compression ratio engines as used in speedway. Conversely it is less enegy dense than petrol hence more fuel is needed and the "mpg figures" for a speedway bike are so poor.

Engines designed to run on petrol can also be modified to run on Methanol, but many of the cc Sidecar Grasstrack bikes using multi-cylinder Japanese road bike engines, although tuned, still use petrol.
